Why switch to water-based parts cleaning?
Traditionally, the washing of parts and components has involved the use of solvents, despite the risks of fire and associated harmful emissions. But today there is another way.
In recent decades, the parts cleaning sector has seen the emergence of valid alternatives to solvents that can remove even stubborn dirt, grease and contamination from a wide variety of materials. These “aqueous” liquids are non-flammable and free of VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), whose emissions are dangerous for humans and the environment, and many are also classified as “non-hazardous”.
What are the benefits of water-based liquids?
Water-based cleaning fluids | Solvents |
---|---|
Non flammable | Flammable (sometimes explosive) |
Classified as "non-hazardous" substances in most cases, reducing the need for specific PPE | Classified as "dangerous" substances, making it necessary to use complete PPE at all times |
Compatible with most materials and extremely effective | Potentially harmful when used with certain materials |
Wide availability of raw materials and more stable costs | Petroleum derivatives, and so influenced by the price and availability of oil |
No emission of VOCs potentially harmful to humans and the environment | Produce VOC emissions which, above certain levels, must be considered in the solvent management plan |
Water-based liquids have numerous benefits, and many companies have already abandoned solvents in favour of health- and environment-conscious solutions. Beyond health and safety, eliminating solvents can also bring advantages from a practical and economic point of view: with lower insurance costs, less need to use PPE and less effort spent on compliance documentation.
