Carbon Impact
Safetykleen began tracking its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in 2022, since then we have continued to make positive changes. In 2024, we achieved a 30% reduction in Scope 3 emissions compared to our 2022 baseline, largely through our focus on machine repair and refurbishment. We have also achieved an 18% reduction on our Scope 1 emissions by increasing the number of electric vehicles and improving their routing.
Chemical and VOC Reductions
Recognising the effects of traditional cleaning solutions, Safetykleen is committed to transitioning from Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) solvents to stable, water-based solutions. We have been working with Europe’s premier chemistry suppliers to achieve this.
By actively investing in innovative technologies, such as our unique Purified Cleaning Technology, (which removes 99% of water impurities) we have been able to reduce chemical use by up to 50% while achieving better cleaning results.
Machine Energy Reduction, Repair & Refurbishment
We prioritise machine insulation to benefit customers and the environment. In collaboration with partners, our innovation team develops next-generation parts washers like the Sonickleen Eco, which uses 57% less energy while cleaning 13% better and 11% faster. Our service reps provide preventative checks and minor repairs on-site, reducing downtime, fuel use, and unnecessary journeys.
Refurbishing extends machine life and reduces environmental impact, saving resources, reducing waste, and lowering emissions.
Recycling & Waste Removal
In 2024, we safely handled over 80 million litres of used cleaning chemistries. Our service includes compliant collection from customer premises, storage at our branch network, and recycling or waste-to-energy recovery. This prevents improper handling and disposal of waste.
We recycle approximately 70% of our customers’ used thinners at our in-house facility in Germany. Recycled chemistries are reused as part of our efforts to achieve a closed-loop model.
Our People
Our people power our success. Feedback from our employee engagement survey has driven action on career growth, recognition, and communication. We also launched core policies on ethics, inclusion, conduct, and sustainability, supported by employee training.
Safety is our priority. Handling hazardous substances and heavy equipment requires care, so we continuously improve risk assessments, operational safety, training, and compliance. Our commitment is backed by ISO certifications: 9001 (Quality), 14001 (Environmental), and 45001 (Health & Safety) across multiple markets.
